Personality:
:

Kuja, in a single  word, is flamboyant.

Vain would be a good second choice. He speaks jovially, prone to giving nicknames to those who he interacts with regularly and is often charming, if a touch distant.  At one time  he was the sort of man who would collect art from all around the world, the sort to quote plays when it struck him as appropriate. Kuja was never anywhere he didn't want to be seen; whether in opulent opera houses or at the side of a queen, he always made sure that he was noticed in places of great prestige.

The truth of the matter is that upon closer inspection, Kuja true nature becomes rapidly apparent.

His love of art is ostentatious in it's genesis, born of Kuja's desire for his existence to have meaning. A being known as a 'genome', Kuja was created to serve the wizard Garland as an Angel of Death. He came to sentience as some sort of fluke and was only allowed to continue existing to bide time for Garland to create the true Angel of Death, his younger "brother" Zidane.

The sophistication that he seems to have gives way under pressure, revealing his narcissism and need to be superior. He does not respect anyone who cannot best him and those who follow him are pushed to cruel extremes in his machinations. He has referred to the queen of the most powerful country in his home world as 'Elephant-lady' and calls his creator ' Old Man'. Nothing is good enough and no one is worthy aside from himself. Hypocritically, he ignored the Black Mages when they asked to be called by number, considering them unworthy of acknowledgement.

Narcissistic as he may be, he is also usually not wrong in the estimation of his own ability.  Kuja possesses a strong tactical mind and often takes account of things that people ignore.  Within a short time of seeing an ability used, he successfully made and executed a plan to destroy his creator. He also possesses unbelievably high levels of willpower, managing to summon enough energy to teleport nine people out of immediate danger while in his death throes. Something of a genius, he was able to create Black Mages out of what amounts to magical runoff and he can withstand an attack from Bahamut, King of Dragons with but a single bleeding cut on his forehead.

The greatest examples of both his faults and his abilities are illustrated in his defeat of Garland.

Kuja figured out how to develop the ability known as Trance after failing in his plans to extract eidolons from Eiko, a young summoner. Observing the girl's companion go into Trance and receive great power to protect it's friend, he surmised that a state of intense emotions was required to use such a power and made a plan to attain this ability for himself.  Shortly thereafter, he found himself back on the Invincible, where he had been created - able to implement his plans to usurp and destroy Garland.

Absorbing the souls aboard the vessel, Kuja attained Trance and killed his creator. The victory was short-lived, however as Garland's spirit appears and explained that Kuja was only supposed to last until Zidane reached maturity. Faced with the empirical evidence that he was no better than the Black Mages he hated, Kuja snapped. He destroyed the world known ad Gaia, using the power of Trance and he fled to the Crystal World, specifically to the crystal where all life came from.

In such a magically potent place, Kuja's fear of death, desire to destroy everything and the sadness felt at the suffering of the living was strong enough to  convince Necron, an entity known as the Darkness of Eternity that all life desired destruction. At the threshold of death, as a result of absorbing the thousands of souls in his master's vessel, Kuja commented that he didn't deserve to live after what he did, implying some form of regret. However, whether this sudden wave of empathy and conscience is permanent or was simply a result of being so close to death remains to be seen.
